With maestros as famous as Amjad Sabri and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, qawwali has a long history in Pakistan – and this history was given a modern touch on Saturday 20th of May when Hamza + Bari along with 11 talented musicians fused qawwali with modern eclectic tunes at Alliance Française as The Southasia Ensemble – an event organized by Salt Arts.
These talented musicians turned the crowd upside down with their music. The perfect balance between harmonium + tabla and sarangi + Sitar, along with lead guitar, bass and electronic music, everything was in perfect harmony. A couple of famous qawwalis and gazals were brought to light in this show including the famous title Yaar Aghyaar mei nazar aaya and Maktab e Ishq ka Dastoor Nirala. Here is a little glimpse of the performance from that night. Enjoy!
Shows and performances like these go about bringing the local music industry in the lime light. It is good to see talented and powerful musicians like Ahsan Bari taking steps towards experimenting with new music while reviving our musical roots at the same time.
